14th August 2018 The National Climate Change Awareness Week began with a church service at the Centennial Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, Saione on 12 August 2018. The Minister for MEIDECC, Hon. Poasi Tei, CEO, Mr. Paula Ma’u, MEIDECC staff, the Non-Government Representatives, District Officers and invited guests attended this important service. Reverend Falematapule Lomu delivered a powerful sermon urging the congregation as Tongan nationals to begin this National Climate Change Awareness week with a change of heart towards our environment.

“Climate Change Is Real, Let Us Act Now!” is the theme for 2018 National Climate Change Awareness Week. The Department of Climate Change will engage in various activities this week with the involvement of primary schools, secondary schools and the public at large.

The National Climate Change Awareness Week will end with an Exhibition Day on Friday 17th August 2018 at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall from 10a.m – 2p.m. The NGOs, line Ministries and relevant Sectors in Tonga will display their works on Friday and it is free for public to view the works implemented on the ground.

The National Climate Change Awareness week runs from 12th – 17th August 2018. We call for the support of line ministries, key stakeholders and Tonga to start Act now so we may adapt to the detrimental effects of climate change in Tonga.
