14th August 2018 The National Climate Change Awareness Week continues with a series of outreach programs to secondary schools in Tongatapu consisting the Liahona High School, Tupou College (Toloa), Tonga College (‘Atele), St Andrews High School, Tupou High School, Tailulu College, Tonga High School, Queen Salote College and Ocean of Light.

The purpose of initiating the awareness programs for High Schools was to raise awareness on climate change. This was due to high school student’s frequent visits to the Department of Climate Change office for their Internal Assessments questionnaires and interviews on climate change impacts to Tonga.

There were two different high-level meeting that also convened yesterday. In the morning session the National Climate Change Coordination Committee meeting was held at MEIDECC’s Conference Room. The Minister for MEIDECC Hon. Poasi Tei chaired the committee with CEOs and representatives from line ministries of the Government present at the meeting.  In the afternoon session the National Development Committee meeting also convened for the Department of Climate Change to present on both sessions and discussed the following:

  • Tonga Joint National Action Plan 2 on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management (JNAP 2)
  • Climate Change Programs/Projects
  • National Climate Change Awareness Week Program

The Awareness program for Monday ended up with a health and fitness exercise.
