28th January, 2018 TONGAN The cable repair ship arrived Nuku’alofa this evening. MEIDECC’s Department of Communications and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs collaborated to provide diplomatic clearance for the ship.
The Department of Communications is the policy institution and regulator for Tonga’s communications sector.
Officials from the Government of Tonga welcomed the ship’s crew members at Queen Salote Wharf.
There is no time-frame for the restoration period but it is understood that the duration of the repair will depend on the extent of the problem.
Latest reports show that the current internet connection is improving. Communications service providers are continuously working to increase the satellite capacity as well as connecting services and offices to the internet.
Ability to make international and domestic calls have been restored.
The Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Standing Committee of Tonga’s Parliament this afternoon met with communications stakeholders’ to update the progress of the work carried out to restore internet connection to essential services through satellite.
