29th April, 2019 The Embassy of Japan in the Kingdom of Tonga invites interested applicants to apply now for the Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology: MEXT) Scholarship for 2020 as outlined below.
Applicants are required to carefully consider, the field of study as described. Qualifications, application procedure and other details of the scholarship are available from the application guidelines through the Embassy’s website at https://www.ton.emb-japan.go.jp/itprtop_en/index.html or from the Embassy of Japan in Nuku’alofa.
- Applicants are encouraged to join the orientation from 2:00pm, Saturday, 11th May at Tupou Tertiary Institute Hall.
Scholarships are available for:
Research Students *Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1985.
FIELD OF STUDY
- Applicants should apply for the field of study they majored in at university or its related field. Moreover, the fields of study must be subjects which applicants will be able to study and research in graduate courses at Japanese universities.
- Traditional entertainment arts such as Kabuki and classical Japanese dances, or subjects that require practical training in specific technologies or techniques at factories or companies are not included in the fields of study under this scholarship program.
- A student who studies medicine, dentistry or welfare science will not be allowed to engage in clinical training such as medical care and operative surgery until he/she obtains a relevant license from the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare under applicable Japanese laws
Undergraduate Students *Applicants must have been born on after April 2, 1995
FIELD OF STUDY
Those who wish to study in Japan as an undergraduate student must choose a “Field of Study(“Social Sciences and Humanities” or “Natural Schiences”), “Course”, and “Major(s)” from the below table. Applicants may enter a first, second, and third choice.
- Social Sciences and Humanities
Social Sciences and Humanities-A: Law, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Japanese language, others.
Social Sciences and Humanities-B: Economics, Business Administration
2. Natural Sciences
Natural Science-A: A Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), Electric and Electronic Studies (Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Information Engineering), Mechanical Studies (Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture), Civil Engineering and Architecture (Civil Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Engineering), Chemical Studies (Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Textile Engineering), other fields (Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Biotechnology).
Natural Sciences-B: Agricultural studies

Those who apply for a specialized training college student must choose a field of study to major in from (1) to (6)

Applicants must submit the documents to the Embassy of Japan within the period shown below. The submitted documents will not be returned.
- Deadline: 4:00pm Thursday, 6th June
- Place: Embassy of Japan, the 5th floor of National Reserve Bank of Tonga Building, Nuku’alofa
- Documents to be submitted: Refer to Guidelines of each scholarship program through the Embassy’s website.
- Primary selection
The Embassy of Japan will carry out the primary screening of applicants by means of a review of the submitted documents, a written examination, and an interview.
- Written examination
- Date: 9:00-17:00, Tuesday, 11th June
- Subject: Refer to Outlines of each scholarship program through the Embassy’s website
- Notification of the result of the written examination
The Embassy of Japan will call the applicants who have passed the written examination.
- Interview *those who pass the written examination will have the interview. Details will be notified to those who have passed the written examination.
- The notification of the results of the primary selection
The Embassy of Japan will call the applicants who have passed the primary selection until 17th July. Applicants who pass the primary screening will be recommended by the Embassy to the MEXT
- Secondary selection
MEXT will carry out the secondary screening of applicants based on the result of the primary selection by the Japanese diplomatic mission
- Notification of the selected applicants
- MEXT will accept applicants whose placement of universities or colleges were made as MEXT scholarship grantees.
- Applicants who have passed the primary screening at a Japanese diplomatic mission are not necessarily accepted as MEXT scholarship grantees. Applicants who were not accepted by any universities nor colleges will not be selected as MEXT scholarship grantees.
- The Embassy of Japan will call the applicants who are accepted as MEXT scholarship grantee in January (Research Students), between December and February 2020 (Undergraduate and Specialized Training College Students)
