13th November, 2019 A half-day press tour for local journalists was conducted yesterday led by the Embassy of Japan in collaboration with JICA Tonga, aiming to deepen the understanding of journalists on Japan’s ongoing economic assistance to Tonga.
His Excellency Mr. Tetsuya Ishii, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tonga said, this press tour is a way for journalists to obtain detailed information on the types of Japan’s economic assistance to Tonga known as the Project Grants, Non-Project Grants, Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) and also the JICA Volunteer Scheme.

“Today’s sight tour and briefing is for the purpose of further deepening your understanding on our economic assistance based on the policy of ‘Seeing is Believing’. Our economic assistance have played a very important role in our cordial bilateral relations.”
The press tour sites included;
- Tonga Broadcasting Commission (NEWS Site with Non-Project Aid)
- The Project for Upgrading the Fasi-Moe-Afi Kindergarten (GGP)
- JICA Volunteer Scheme (Soroban at TIOE, Pahu)
Mr. Ishii emphasized the values and features of their economic assistance better today than yesterday.
“Our main values are for long lasting, safe and technology advanced and I hope that the news you tell the public will draw the good relation between Japan and Tonga. As we focus on the Accomplishment of SDGs based on the concept of human security, High Quality Provision and the Environmentally Friendly between us. I would like to focus on the role of people in projects through today’s three cooperation. We look forward to continuously enhance the bilateral relations with Tonga.”
Journalists participated in the tour were from Tonga Broadcasting Commission, FM 87.5, FM 88.6, Nuku’alofa Times Online, Kele’a Newspaper, Taimi ‘o Tonga Newspaper, Kakalu Newspaper, and Information Department (MEIDECC).
