14th November, 2019 The Tonga Pacific Resilience Project (PREP) under the Tonga Meteorological Service (TMS) and Department of National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) of MEIDECC began its very first training on the Occupational, Health and Safety (OHS) for construction companies in Tonga on Wednesday 13th and 14th November for two days at Faleola Hall of the Konisitutone Church of Tonga.
A total of thirty participants from local construction companies and World Bank projects implemented in Tonga participated in the training led by Mr. Mike Wilson, an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist from World Bank. Mr. Wilson explains the importance of the training as a reference to the World Bank’s requirements and good industry standards and procedures that are used within the construction industry. He continues to say that it is important to note that the workers have been given the opportunity to be engaged, promoting and maintaining a high level of health and safety working practices and conditions.

The training was officially opened by Mr. Paula Ma’u, CEO for MEIDECC. This training is important for participants to learn about the company management plans, the ethical basis of consultation, their commitment to provide the highest level of protection for its workers and all stakeholders involved at all levels to ensure the highest standards of health, safety and well-being requirements.
