January 21st-22nd, 2020 – The Tonga Pacific Resilience Project (PREP) under the Tonga Meteorological Service (TMS) and Department of National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) of MEIDECC delivered a two days training on the Occupational, Health and Safety (OHS) with the Tonga Institute of Science and Technology(TIST) and Tonga Skills. The training was held at the Department of Energy Conference Room with twelve participants attended the training from 21st and 22nd January 2020.
The training focused on ramping up the participants knowledge on following areas:
- Health and Safety Management framework
- Communication
- Role sand Responsibilities
- Training and Competency
- Hazard/Risk Management
- Event Management
- Emergency Management
- Traffic Management
- Inspection, monitoring and auditing
- Subcontractors engagement
- Hazardous substances/goods
- Plant and equipment management
- General Construction Activities
Mr. Mike Wilson, an Occupational and Health Specialist from New Zealand, conducted the training and explained that the training is going to be an invaluable tool moving forward toward making working environment and construction work as safe as it can be. It is crucial for participants to understand that schools and workplaces present risks and hazards that students and staff need to be aware of. At the end of the training, certificates were awarded to participants.The training was very successful and PREP wishes to work closely with TIST and Tonga Skills to promoting the knowledge of teachers, trainers and supervisors on Health and Safety Issues.
