02nd July, 2020 Tonga Police would like to reinforce safety messages in the water, following two separate Search and Rescue at sea in Tongatapu on Friday 26th June 2020 and Wednesday 1st of July 2020.

On Friday 26th of June the Police Search and Rescue boat the ‘Alotolu, responded to a call for assistance and rescued three fishermen out fishing on a 7 meters timber boat around the Island of Polo‟a when their boat engine broke down.

Following this Search and Rescue, on Wednesday 1st July at around 2:00 am the Search and Rescue team responded to a call for assistance from two men on board a fishing boat near Pangaimotu Island, where their boat engine had also broken down.

All five fishermen rescued were in good health and both boats were towed back to Nuku’alofa.

Both crews did not have any safety gear in the boat. “We emphasize the importance of taking precautions and safety measures before embarking on any sea voyages. To make sure that they have a communication means, life jacket, emergency flares and a beacon,” says A/Deputy Commissioner ‘Atunaisa Taumoepeau.
