7th September, 2016 CVDs (Cardio Vascular Diseases) are the number one cause of death in the world, with over 17 million annual global deaths. They constitute for the largest portion of premature deaths due to NCDs (non-communicable diseases) worldwide.
Tongans (adults) according to the STEPS report 2014 have a 99% risk of developing NCDs. Heart diseases thus make up a substantial portion of this.
The focus of Outcome 3 of the Hala Fononga – the ‘National Strategy For Prevention And Control Of Non-Communicable Diseases 2015-2020’ is on improved early detection, treatment and sustained management of people with or at high risk of NCDs.
Chinese military strategist and philosopher Sun Tzu had said “Know your enemy and know yourself and you can fight a hundred battles without disaster”. On Tonga Mo’ui Lelei this week, we are taking this statement very seriously. Part 2 of the 3 series special leading up to World Heart day focuses on getting you familiar with your enemy. Join renowned heart specialist Dr. Sione Latu of Vaiola hospital and Owen Kami, a former high risk NCD person; and get better equipped to defeat CVDs.
Dr. Sione Latu is passionate about seeing Tonga achieve it’s National NCD Strategy goals, and is committed to helping Tongans getting fitter and healthier. Owen Kami, has battled his demons, and will share a little about his personal journey of transition from a high risk NCD person to now being fitter and healthier.
