17th February 2023 TONGAN Tonga Power Limited (TPL) regrets to announce that due to the unexpected failure of two out of its seven gensets, the company is currently conducting emergency electricity load shedding operations in the island of Tongatapu.
TPL requires all seven gensets to be operational to meet the customer electricity demand, but due to the failure of the two gensets, the company has had to implement load shedding measures to balance the supply of electricity with
customer demand.
In addition, TPL’s battery energy storage systems could not collect sufficient renewable energy due to the cloudy and rainy weather, which has made the situation more challenging.
TPL is working tirelessly to restore the two gensets that have failed. In the meantime, load shedding will be conducted on a rotational basis, with specific areas experiencing power outages. TPL will make every effort to provide advance notice to affected customers before load shedding begins, but due to the technical nature of the situation, this may not always be possible. Updates on affected areas will be provided once they have been confirmed.
TPL understands that load shedding can cause inconvenience to its customers, and apologizes for any inconvenience caused. However, the measures are necessary to prevent a complete blackout and ensure that essential services
such as hospitals, water supply and communication services can continue to operate.
TPL would like to assure its customers that it is doing everything possible to restore full electricity supply as soon as possible and minimize the impact of the current situation. Customers are encouraged to be prepared for upcoming emergency power outages.
