Strong Wind Warning and Heavy Rain Warning are now in force Ha’apai, Eua and Tongatapu.

10th October 2016 A developing low pressure system with associated cloud and rain to the North West approaching   Tongatapu and ‘Eua. Associated rain, thunderstorms and strong winds are expected to start affecting part of the group tonight and tomorrow.

The developing low pressure system with associated trough has potential to produce more than 100mm of  rainfall within the next 24 hours which is likely to cause flash  flooding in low  lying  areas of Tongatapu, Eua and Ha’apai. The system is expected to pass just to the west of Tongatapu and Eua tonight and it will bring strong winds to Haapai, Telekitonga and Telekitokelau, Tongatapu and Eua Land Areas and Waters tonight and tomorrow.

Warnings for Tonga are;

  • A Strong Wind Warning is in effect for Telekitonga, Telekitokelau, Ha’apai, Tongatapu and Eua Waters
  • A Strong Wind Warning is in effect for Land Area of Tongatapu and Eua
  • A Heavy Rain Warning is in effect for Ha’apai, Tongatapu and Eua.

Tonga Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the system and its movement and warnings may be upgraded at any time. Hence people are advised to take heed of warnings and tune in to the radio, marine radio or our website for the latest weather bulletin
