Tonga is also listed amongst the countries where diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, cardiovascular disease, kidney failure and lower-limb amputation. 99.9% of the Tongan population according to statistics is at risk of getting Type 2 diabetes” says Dr. Taniela.
“Eyes on Diabetes” is the theme for World Diabetes Day, which is on the 14th of November 2016. The focus is on promoting the importance of screening to ensure early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and treatment to reduce the risk of serious complications.
Work on the Outcomes set out in the Hala Fononga (National Strategy For Prevention and Control of NCDs 2015-2020), multi-sectoral partnerships are now getting onto another level, with everyone sinking their teeth deep into the work at hand. Outcome 1 of this strategy is in fact completely dedicated to ensuring that Tongan infants (age 2 and below) have a healthier start to life.
