He further explains how basic fundamental changes in the Tongan lifestyle can actually help prevent the disease to begin with.
“However once you get Diabetes you have it for life” says Dr. Taniela.
Thus the adage “prevention is better than cure” is truly pivotal as far as Diabetes goes. “Eyes on Diabetes” is the theme for World Diabetes Day, which is today, the 14th of November 2016. The focus is on promoting the importance of screening to ensure early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and treatment to reduce the risk of serious complications.
Work on the Outcomes set out in the Hala Fononga (National Strategy For Prevention and Control of NCDs 2015-2020), multi-sectoral partnerships are now getting onto another level, with everyone sinking their teeth deep into the work at hand. Outcome 1 of this strategy is in fact completely dedicated to ensuring that Tongan infants (age 2 and below) have a healthier start to life.
