19th November, 2016 The Kingdom of Tonga and CTCN have signed the Response Plan for a technical assistance project to develop Tonga Energy Efficiency Master Plan (TEEMP).
The CTCN is an operational arm of the UNFCCC Technology Mechanism, hosted by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has shown commitment to assist Tonga in developing the TEEMP
Director of CTCN Mr. Jukka Uosukainen and the CEO of MEIDECC Mr. Paula Ma’u signed the TEEMP’s project response plan at the COP22 in Marrakech, Morocco. Mr. Uosukainen stressed the importance of this project to tackle Tonga’s energy targets and National Determined Contributions and commended Tonga for taking the lead in the Pacific Region.

CTCN will support the development of TEEMP, which will not only focus on the power sector but also other key development sectors such as transport, agriculture, tourism, education and infrastructure. TEEMP will serve as a strategic model for a well-coordinated and cost effective implementation of innovative energy efficiency initiatives in Tonga.
The implementation of the project is expected to commence in 2017 and will be coordinated by the Energy Department of Tonga and The National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the US, with the support of the Pacific Community (SPC) under the Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE).
