Tonga Marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities

05th December, 2017 On Saturday, 02nd December 2017, Tonga’s Ministry of Internal Affairs with various partners celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities under the theme of ‘Reformation towards a resilient and sustainable society of all’, at Tungi Colonnade Yard.

The celebration program falls within the marking of the 16 Days of Activism, a worldwide campaign to oppose violence against Women and Children in the society commencing from the 25th November to 10th December every year.

Speaking to more than 50 participants and guests, the Deputy High Commissioner for Australia, Ms. Rhona Mcphee said the theme for this year is calling for a very united front in ensuring that there are opportunities for advancement in all sphere of life with Persons with Disabilities.

“The reformation process, we will make sure to create a sustainable and resilient society for ALL. That society is marked by, equal access to all types of services, education, health, law and so on. A just society where, they find non-discrimination. A society that is thrive with respect, love and dignity for ALL.”

Ms. Mcphee stated that Australia is committing to support Person with Disabilities to fully participate in their communities by ensuring equal access to all aspects of public life and empowering people with disabilities to be contributors, decision makers and leaders.

“Like the famous saying, ‘ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL’ with this theme and we sure going to achieve a resilient and sustainable society for ALL”.

Acting Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ms. Luisa Manuofetoa conveyed her sincere gratitude to the Deputy High Commissioner of Australia, Foreign Dignitaries, Development Partners, District Officers and Town Officers and guests for the on-going assistance and for also taking time to attend the event.

Several representatives from development partners joined the celebration by delivering messages and poems related to disabilities.

The event concluded on Sunday, 3rd December with a special prayer service at the Free Wesleyan Church of Fasi-moe-Afi lead by His Eminence Cardinal Soane Patita Paini Mafi.
