06th December, 2017 Tonga National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) in conjunction with The Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) hosted a one-day workshop this morning at Tungi Colonnade. Funded by the Australia Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the workshop aimed for those who are responsible for ICT Systems to be aware of the latest cyber security threats and how to mitigate these risks.
Senior Internet Security Specialist from APNIC, Mr. Adli Wahid said, “The overview of this workshop is about awareness in terms of protecting, securing data and internet services using cyber security. Comparing to the past and nowadays, everyone owns a mobile phone which can be easily affected by the latest threats such as malware. This workshop will assist security practitioners to stay alert of these threats and how to address them”.
“Security is about; educating different stakeholders, working together in sharing information and best practices and making sure that the internet is a secure, safe place for everyone,” he added.
Director of Tonga CERT, Mr. Siosaia Vaipuna conveyed his sincere gratitude to Mr. Adli Wahid and External Relations Manager, Mr. Klee Aiken from APNIC for the on-going assistance and collaboration with the setting up of Tonga CERT and conducting this workshop where Systems Administrators in Tonga have the opportunity to build their capacity in Cyber Security.
Mr. Vaipuna added that this is part of their proactive services to their constituents which includes disseminating of advisories on the latest online threats and training.
He also acknowledged participants for availing their time to attend the one-day workshop.
Participants at the workshop are expected to oversee that our daily life, economic vitality, and national security depend on a stable, safe, and resilient cyberspace. Cyberspace and its underlying infrastructure are vulnerable to a wide range of risks stemming from both physical and cyber threats and hazards. Sophisticated cyber actors and nation-states exploit vulnerabilities to steal information and money and are developing capabilities to disrupt, destroy, or threaten the delivery of essential services.
