27th February, 2018 The National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) and stakeholders have completed the second round of distributing relief supplies to affected families in Tongatapu. The second round of distributing relief supplies in ‘Eua is set to complete this week.
Director of NEMO Mr. Leveni ‘Aho stated in a press conference yesterday that there is a concern about safe and clean drinking water for families and schools to lessen the possibilities of any future disease outbreaks.
He said that the damages caused to schools was a worry but UNICEF has provided school materials and tents to be distributed amongst the affected schools.
Mr. ‘Aho said that in addition to the tents contributed by UNICEF, NEMO also provided tents to high schools including Queen Salote College, Tupou High School. ‘Apifo’ou, Beulah and Takuilau College.
Five villages, two at the Western District and three at the Eastern District have received power through five generators donated by Australia over the weekend.
Communications in Tonga is fully operational and ‘Eua’s electricity has been restored.
Mr. ‘Aho said that at the moment they are planning to discuss with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry strategies and programmes to revive the agriculture sector from the extensive destructions after TC Gita.
